Boiler Not Firing: Safe Checks and When to Call for Help

Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

Hot-water and steam boilers heat a large share of older Long Island homes, and when one will not fire the radiators and baseboards go cold quickly. Some causes are simple to check; others belong to a technician. If anything seems unsafe, stop and call (631) 414-7141. We answer 24/7.

Call 24/7: (631) 414-7141

Smell gas or hear a carbon monoxide alarm? Leave the house first, then call 911 or the gas utility from outside.

Why does a boiler stop firing?

Usually because a safety control stopped it: a burner lockout after failed ignition, a low-water cutoff, a pressure problem or a tripped limit. Other causes are no fuel, a thermostat call that never reaches the boiler, a failed igniter or flame sensor, or a circulator pump that stopped moving water.

  • Burner lockout after several failed ignition tries.
  • Low water or low pressure tripping the low-water cutoff.
  • Oil supply: an empty tank, a clogged filter or a worn nozzle.
  • Gas boilers: igniter, flame sensor or gas valve faults.
  • Circulator pump: the burner may run, but heat never reaches the rooms.

What can you check safely on a boiler?

Look at the thermostat, the boiler service switch and breaker, the fuel supply, and the pressure gauge on the boiler. Write down any error code or flashing light. Press an oil burner reset button once at most. Never open the burner or add water to a steam boiler unless you know how.

  1. Thermostat set to Heat and above room temperature, with fresh batteries.
  2. Power: the boiler service switch is on and the breaker has not tripped.
  3. Fuel: oil tank gauge, or other gas appliances working.
  4. Pressure gauge: note the reading. A hot-water boiler showing very low or very high pressure needs a technician.
  5. Reset once: one press of the red reset on an oil burner. If it locks out again, leave it off.

When is a boiler problem an emergency?

Leave the house and call 911 or the gas utility from outside if you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Call us right away if the pressure gauge is in the red, the relief valve is discharging water, there is water on the floor, or you hear a boom or see soot.

  • Gas smell or CO alarm: everyone out first, then call 911 or National Grid from outside.
  • Relief valve discharging or the gauge in the red.
  • Leaks from the boiler, pipes or fittings.
  • Puff-back, soot or a boom on ignition from an oil burner.
  • Freezing forecast with no heat, or vulnerable people at home.

What does K2 do on a boiler call?

We make the boiler safe, then test ignition, controls, water level, pressure and the circulator to find the cause. You hear what failed and the price before any repair. Most common failures are fixed on the first visit; if a part must be ordered, we tell you and restore heat safely where possible.

We repair gas and oil boilers, hot-water and steam. On the phone we ask what the boiler is doing and any code it shows, then give you a time window and tell you if it changes. See boiler repair for what a full boiler service covers.

Questions people ask

Can I add water to my boiler myself?

On a steam boiler with a sight glass, some homeowners are shown how to add water, but only when the boiler is cool and only to the normal line. On a hot-water system, low pressure usually points to a leak or a failed fill valve, so call rather than adding water.

My boiler runs but the radiators stay cold. Why?

The circulator pump may have failed, a zone valve may be stuck, or there may be air in the lines. Those need a technician. Note which rooms are cold and whether any are still warm; it helps us find the fault faster.

Is a boiler that keeps locking out dangerous?

It is a sign something is wrong with ignition, fuel or combustion. Leave it off after one reset and call. Repeated resets on an oil burner can cause a puff-back.
