Ducted heat pump and ductless mini-split repair for homes within 15 miles of Deer Park, answered 24/7.
K2 repairs ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits from our shop at 60 S 2nd St, Unit V in Deer Park, for homes within about 15 miles across western Suffolk and eastern Nassau. We answer 24/7, find the fault, and tell you the cause and the price before any work starts.
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?
Most of the time it is in defrost: for a few minutes the outdoor coil is being warmed, and the air at the vents feels cool. If it blows cool for more than 10 to 15 minutes at a time, look for a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, a failed defrost control or backup heat that never comes on.
Is it normal for my heat pump to ice up?
A light frost that clears every 30 to 90 minutes is normal; that is the defrost cycle working. A unit buried in solid ice, or ice that keeps building on the top and sides, is not. That points to a defrost board or sensor fault, low refrigerant, a stopped outdoor fan or a gutter dripping onto the unit.
Why is my mini-split flashing a light or showing an error code?
The unit has shut itself down because a sensor or control saw something out of range. Codes point to a category: indoor-to-outdoor communication, a temperature sensor, drainage or a protection shutdown. On a Babylon call this year, a flashing light on a three-year-old mini-split came down to dirty indoor filters and a dirty outdoor coil.
Why is water leaking from my indoor unit?
Almost always the condensate drain. The line clogs with algae and dirt, or the drain pump fails, and water backs up and spills from the wall unit or air handler. On a Commack mini-split this spring, Waseem cleared the blocked drain line with nitrogen and cleaned the outdoor coil, and the leak stopped.
Why won't the outdoor unit start?
Check the breaker and the outdoor disconnect switch first. If both are on, the usual causes are a failed capacitor, a burned contactor, a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units on a mini-split, or a failed control board or compressor. An outdoor unit that hums but won't start most often needs a capacitor.
Why does the backup heat never kick in?
Backup heat is either electric heat strips in the air handler or, on a dual-fuel system, your boiler or furnace. If it never comes on, we look at the thermostat settings and wiring, a tripped heat-strip breaker or limit, a failed sequencer, or a dual-fuel control set to the wrong switchover temperature.
Why is my heat pump making a loud noise?
A short whoosh as the unit goes into or out of defrost is normal; that's the reversing valve shifting. Grinding, rattling or screeching isn't. It usually means a worn fan motor bearing, a loose panel, a fan blade hitting ice, or a compressor problem. If the noise is metallic, turn the system off and call.
Which parts fail most often?
Behind those symptoms is a short list of parts we test on almost every heat pump call:
- Defrost board and sensor. They decide when the outdoor coil needs defrosting. When they fail, the coil ices over and heat output drops.
- Reversing valve. It switches the system between heating and cooling. A valve stuck halfway gives lukewarm air in both modes.
- Capacitor and contactor. The most common electrical failures on the outdoor unit, and usually a quick repair.
- Refrigerant leak. Low refrigerant shows up as icing, weak heat and long run times. We find the leak before recharging, rather than topping it off.
- Condensate drain and drain pump. Clogged lines and failed pumps cause most indoor leaks, especially on attic air handlers.
- Dirty filters and coils. Mini-split filters clog fast, and a dirty outdoor coil can trigger the same shutdowns as a failed part.
What happens on a heat pump repair visit?
A heat pump repair visit follows the same order every time:
- We ask what it is doing. When you call, tell us whether the outdoor unit runs, whether there is ice, and any code or blinking light. That decides which parts go on the van.
- Safety and power. The technician checks the breakers, the disconnect and the wiring before running the system.
- Diagnosis. They read the fault codes, test the capacitor, contactor, sensors and boards with a meter, check refrigerant pressures and watch a heating cycle and a defrost.
- A price before work. You get the cause, the repair, the price and whether it can wait, before anything is replaced.
- Repair and test. After the repair we run the system in heat, check the temperature at the vents and confirm the drain is clear.
What does heat pump repair cost?
In K2's billing from January 2022 to October 2026, 39 ductless heat pump (mini-split) repair calls had a median of $530, and the middle 50% of customers paid $435 to $741. Read that as an estimate based on what customers paid, not a quote; the part that failed decides where in that range your repair lands. Our records don't separate ducted heat pump repairs, so we don't quote a figure for those.
What moves the price:
- The part. A capacitor, a drain cleaning, a defrost board and a reversing valve are very different jobs.
- Refrigerant work. Finding and fixing a leak, then pressure testing and recharging, takes longer than an electrical repair.
- Access. An attic air handler or a wall unit high on a stairwell takes more time than one at eye level.
- Parts availability. Some mini-split boards and sensors are brand-specific and may need to be ordered.
Maintenance plan members get a repair discount and priority scheduling; see our maintenance plans.
Should you repair or replace your heat pump?
Repair is usually right when the failed part is a capacitor, contactor, sensor, drain or fan motor, and the system is otherwise sound. Replacement is worth discussing when the compressor has failed on an older system, when the refrigerant leak is in the coil and keeps coming back, or when repairs have stacked up two seasons running.
Our Cost Estimator puts a heat pump replacement at $6,000 to $15,000 as a planning range. For the numbers behind that, see the heat pump cost guide and what a ductless mini-split costs on Long Island. Financing is available through Rheem KwikComfort, with credit provided by Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval. See financing for how it works.
What do our job records say to check first?
Tip from Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician: check the filters, the outdoor coil and the drain before anyone adds refrigerant. On three of Waseem's mini-split calls this year, in Dix Hills, Babylon and Commack, the refrigerant checked good every time. The fixes were a coil cleaning, clean filters and a cleared drain line.
You can rinse or vacuum mini-split filters yourself every few weeks in heavy use. Leave the coil chemicals, the drain clearing and anything inside the outdoor unit to us.

Heat Pump Repair: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does heat pump repair cost on Long Island?
In K2's billing from January 2022 to October 2026, 39 ductless heat pump repair calls had a median of $530, and the middle 50% paid $435 to $741. The failed part decides where yours lands, and you get the price before any work starts.
Can you come out today?
We answer 24/7 and give you an arrival window when you call. How soon depends on the day's calls, and the first cold nights of winter are busy for everyone, so we don't promise arrival times in minutes. Tell us if the house has no heat at all or someone at home is vulnerable.
Which heat pump and mini-split brands do you repair?
We work on the brands we see most on Long Island, including Fujitsu, Daikin, Bosch and Mitsubishi Electric, plus most other major brands. Tell us the brand and any error code when you call, so the technician brings the right parts and the right code table.
Will the manufacturer warranty cover my repair?
It might cover the part. We look up the coverage by model and serial number, and if the part is covered we arrange it through the manufacturer and tell you what labor applies before the repair. Manufacturer warranty registration on new equipment is handled for you; see our warranty page.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old mini-split?
Usually yes, if the failed part is a capacitor, sensor, fan motor or drain and the compressor is healthy. A failed compressor or a coil leak that keeps coming back on a system that age is where replacement starts to make more sense. We give you both prices so you can compare.
Do you repair heat pumps K2 didn't install?
Yes. We repair ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits whoever installed them. If you have the installer's paperwork, model and serial numbers, have them handy, because they help us check warranty coverage and order the right parts.
