UV Lights for HVAC Systems
Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Air handlers in Long Island attics and basements stay damp all summer, and the cooling coil and drain pan are a natural place for mold and bacteria to grow. A germicidal UV light mounted inside the system keeps those surfaces cleaner. K2 installs and services UV lights in air handlers and furnaces within 15 miles of Deer Park.
What does a UV light in an HVAC system do?
A germicidal UV lamp shines ultraviolet light on the cooling coil and drain pan, where moisture lets mold and bacteria grow. Keeping those surfaces clean helps the coil transfer heat and cuts musty smells. Some systems also aim UV at the moving air, though air passes the lamp quickly.
UV lights are most useful in humid conditions, which describes most Long Island summers. They work alongside good filtration and a clean drain, not instead of them.
Which systems can take a UV light?
Most ducted systems: air handlers in attics and closets, and furnaces with a cooling coil on top. The lamp mounts through a small opening near the coil and needs power from the equipment or an outlet. Ductless mini-splits generally do not take add-on UV lamps.
We have installed UV lights as part of new system installs and as add-ons to existing air handlers, including systems with more than one zone, where each air handler gets its own lamp.
How often does a UV lamp need replacing?
Germicidal UV lamps lose strength over time even while they still glow, so most manufacturers call for replacing the lamp about once a year. The exact interval for your model is on the lamp or in its manual. A lamp that still lights may no longer be doing much.
Lamp replacement fits naturally into a spring cooling tune-up. Always turn off power to the unit before opening it, and never look directly at a lit UV lamp.
Is UV light safe in a home HVAC system?
Installed inside the equipment with the access panel closed, the light stays inside the system. Direct exposure is harmful to eyes and skin, so lamps are mounted where they cannot be seen during normal use, and many are wired to switch off when the panel is opened.
If you are concerned about ozone, ask about the specific lamp: many HVAC UV lamps are designed not to produce ozone. We check the product details before recommending one.
What does K2 do when installing a UV light?
We look at the coil and drain pan, choose a lamp sized for the coil, mount it so it covers the coil and pan, wire it to the equipment and test it. On existing systems we often clean the coil and clear the drain first, so the lamp starts on clean surfaces.
If your system has musty smells or a slimy drain pan, start with a cleaning; see tune-ups. For more options, see indoor air quality and brands we install and service.
Do you need a UV light?
You might if the air handler sits in a humid attic or basement, the drain pan has slime or the drain clogs repeatedly, or there is a musty smell when the system starts. If your coil stays clean and dry with regular maintenance, a UV light adds less.
UV light is not a substitute for maintenance: the coil, filter and drain still need regular attention. It is one more way to keep the parts of the system that stay wet all summer from becoming a source of odors.
UV Lights: common questions
Does a UV light replace my air filter?
No. UV light keeps surfaces inside the system cleaner; the filter still catches dust and pollen. Use both.
How do I know if my UV lamp is working?
Many lamps have a small viewing window or indicator light. Because output fades before the lamp burns out, replace it on the manufacturer's schedule even if it still lights.
Can a UV light help with a musty smell?
It can if the smell comes from growth on the coil or drain pan. Clean the coil and clear the drain first, then the lamp helps keep those surfaces clean.
Should every Long Island home have a UV light?
No. It is most useful where the air handler sits in a damp attic or basement, the drain pan grows slime, or someone at home is sensitive to mold. A well-maintained system in a dry location may not need one.
Can a UV light be added to my existing air handler?
Usually, yes. The lamp mounts through a small opening in the cabinet near the coil and is wired to the equipment. We check the space and access before recommending a model.
Do UV lights need any other maintenance?
Beyond replacing the lamp on schedule, wipe the lamp sleeve when the system is serviced, since dust on the glass blocks UV output. Turn the power off first.
