Gas Line Installation for Heating Equipment

Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

Gas connections and piping arranged for the furnaces, boilers, water heaters and packaged units we install.

Do you need a new gas line for your heating equipment? When a furnace, boiler, water heater or rooftop unit is replaced or moved, or a home switches from oil to natural gas, the gas piping often has to be extended, resized or reconnected. K2 takes care of the gas connection for the equipment we install in homes within about 15 miles of Deer Park, and makes sure the piping is leak-tested before anything is started.

When does a home need new gas piping?

Most gas line work we do is part of an equipment job rather than a standalone project. Typical reasons:

  • Oil-to-gas conversion. A new gas furnace or boiler replaces an oil unit and needs a gas line from the meter. See oil-to-gas conversion.
  • Relocated equipment. A furnace, boiler or water heater moved to a new spot needs piping extended to it.
  • Bigger or added equipment. A higher-capacity furnace, a second appliance or a packaged rooftop unit can need larger pipe to carry enough gas.
  • Old connectors and fittings. Corroded pipe, outdated flexible connectors or a missing shutoff valve at the appliance are replaced during the install.
  • New water heaters. A replacement tank or a change in location often means new connections and a sediment trap.

Smell gas? Leave the house right away without touching switches, and call 911 or National Grid from outside. Do not go back in until it has been declared safe.

How does K2 handle gas line work?

What happens on the job? We plan the route and pipe size along with the equipment, then install and test it before start-up.

  1. Load and route. We total the gas demand of every appliance on the line and pick a pipe size and route from the meter or existing piping to the equipment.
  2. Install. Pipe and fittings are run, supported and protected where they pass through walls and floors, with a shutoff valve and sediment trap at the appliance.
  3. Leak test. The new piping is tested and every joint checked before the appliance is lit.
  4. Start-up. We connect the furnace, boiler or water heater, light it, check the burner and venting and confirm it runs correctly.

Depending on the project, new piping may be handled by our team or by a licensed plumber, and we confirm who does what before work starts. Gas service lines and meters belong to the utility, National Grid, and changes to them are arranged with the utility. Gas work usually needs local approval and inspection; K2 does not file town permits, so confirm the requirements with your building department.

Examples from our records: on a West Babylon oil-to-gas furnace install, the gas line was run to the new furnace; on an East Meadow water heater replacement, the gas and water connections were remade and checked for leaks.

What affects the cost of gas line work?

What changes the price? The length of the run, how many walls and floors it crosses, and the pipe size the equipment needs.

  • Distance from the meter or existing piping to the equipment.
  • Access through finished basements, ceilings and walls versus an open utility room.
  • Pipe size needed for the total load of all gas appliances on the line.
  • Utility work if the meter or service line has to be upgraded, which is arranged with National Grid.
  • Doing it with the install. Gas piping costs less when it is part of a furnace, boiler or water heater job.

Can the existing gas line be reused?

Can you keep the gas pipe you have? Often, if it is in good condition and large enough for the new equipment. A new, larger furnace or an added appliance can need more gas than the old pipe carries, and corroded pipe or outdated connectors should be replaced while the system is open. We check the size and condition before deciding.

Is natural gas available on my Long Island street?

National Grid supplies natural gas on Long Island, and many streets have it, but some neighborhoods, especially on the North Shore and in larger-lot areas, do not. National Grid can tell you whether a gas main is available and what a new service line involves. We can then plan the equipment and the piping inside the house.

What should you do if you smell gas?

Leave the house right away, taking everyone with you. Do not switch lights on or off, use the phone inside, or try to find the leak. Call 911 or National Grid from outside, and stay out until you are told it is safe. Then call us to repair any appliance or piping problem that caused it.

Gas Lines: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you run gas lines for new furnaces and boilers?

Yes. When we install a gas furnace, boiler, water heater or packaged unit, the gas connection is part of the job, and the piping is leak-tested before start-up. Depending on the project, the piping may be done by our team or a licensed plumber, and we confirm that before work starts.

Who handles the gas meter?

The meter and the service line to the house belong to National Grid. If they need to be added or upgraded, that is arranged with the utility. We handle the piping and connections inside the house for the equipment we install.

Do gas lines need a permit?

Gas piping work usually needs local approval and inspection. K2 does not file town permits, so check with your town or village building department before the work is scheduled.

What size gas line does a furnace need?

It depends on the furnace input, the other gas appliances on the same line and the length of the run. We total the load and size the pipe so every appliance gets enough gas at the same time.
