Whole-Home Air Cleaners and Filtration

Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

A standard one-inch filter protects the equipment, but it does little for the air you breathe. Whole-home media air cleaners and high-efficiency filters catch far more pollen, dust and pet dander. K2 installs and services air cleaners and filtration upgrades on ducted systems within 15 miles of Deer Park.

Why upgrade filtration in a Long Island home?

Long Island has heavy tree pollen in spring, grass and weed pollen into summer, and many homes have pets, finished basements and attic ductwork that pulls in dust. A deeper media filter catches much more of that than a thin filter, and it does so without choking the system when it is sized correctly.

Signs your filtration is not keeping up: dust settling quickly after cleaning, allergy symptoms that ease when you leave home, dark streaks around supply registers, and filters that clog within weeks.

How does a whole-home media air cleaner work?

It replaces the thin filter slot with a cabinet that holds a thick, pleated media filter, often four or five inches deep. All the air the system moves passes through it. The extra depth gives far more surface area, so it can filter finer particles while keeping airflow up.

  • Media air cleaner: a cabinet with a deep pleated filter, installed at the furnace or air handler.
  • High-efficiency (HEPA-style) filtration: higher-rated filters or a dedicated filtration setup where the system and ductwork can handle the airflow.
  • Filter rating: higher MERV ratings catch smaller particles, but the system has to be able to move air through them.

Which systems can take a whole-home air cleaner?

Any ducted system: furnaces, air handlers and heat pumps with ductwork. There has to be room at the return or the equipment to mount the cabinet, and the blower and ducts need to handle the filter's resistance. Ductless mini-splits use their own built-in filters instead.

We often add an air cleaner during a central air or furnace replacement, when the equipment is already open. On a mini-split, cleaning the indoor unit filters regularly is the equivalent step.

How often should whole-home filters be changed?

It depends on the filter. Thin filters may need changing every one to three months; deep media filters usually last much longer. Aprilaire, one of the brands we install, designs its media filters to be changed about once or twice a year depending on the model. Check the label on your filter cabinet.

Change filters more often during heavy pollen season, with pets, or after renovation work. A clogged filter starves the system of air, which can freeze the cooling coil or trip the furnace on its high-limit switch.

What does K2 do when installing filtration?

We check how much air your system moves and how the return is set up, then recommend a cabinet and filter that fit without restricting airflow. We install the cabinet, seal it to the ductwork and confirm airflow afterward. Filter changes can be part of a maintenance visit.

On a recent Lake Ronkonkoma repair, a dirty filter was part of why the system was blowing warm air, and we replaced it with a HEPA filter. Aprilaire air cleaners are among the products we install regularly; see brands we install and service.

Do you need better whole-home filtration?

You likely do if anyone at home has allergies or asthma, you have pets, you live near busy roads or construction, or dust returns days after cleaning. If your system still uses a thin one-inch filter, a media cabinet is usually the most noticeable air quality upgrade.

Filtration only works while air is moving through it. Some homes run the furnace or air handler fan on a low continuous setting during pollen season so the filter keeps cleaning the air between heating or cooling cycles.

Air Purifiers & Filtration: common questions

Is a higher MERV filter always better?

Not if your system cannot move air through it. A filter that is too restrictive reduces airflow, which can cause comfort problems and freeze the coil. A deep media cabinet lets you use a better filter without that penalty.

Will an air cleaner help with allergies?

It can reduce airborne pollen, dust and dander that pass through the system, which many allergy sufferers notice. It does not replace cleaning, and it only filters air while the system is running.

Do I still need a regular filter with a media air cleaner?

No. The media cabinet replaces the standard filter slot, so the deep filter is the only one the system needs.
