Thermostat Installation on Long Island

Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

Installing and wiring smart, Wi-Fi and standard thermostats for furnaces, boilers, central air and heat pumps.

K2 installs smart, Wi-Fi and standard thermostats for furnaces, boilers, central air and heat pumps in homes within 15 miles of Deer Park. We check that the thermostat matches the system and the wiring before it goes on the wall, so it controls heating and cooling correctly from the first day.

When does a thermostat need replacing?

Replace the thermostat when the system itself checks out but does not respond properly to the thermostat: wrong temperatures, heat or cooling that will not start, a blank screen with fresh batteries, or a Wi-Fi model that only controls one of heating or cooling. A new thermostat is also worth fitting with a new furnace, boiler or heat pump.

  • The system works, the thermostat does not. On a recent Dix Hills call, the heating checked out fine and the old thermostat was the fault, so we installed a Nest the homeowner supplied.
  • A thermostat that controls only cooling. On a West Babylon installation, the first Wi-Fi thermostat ran cooling only, so we replaced it with one that runs both.
  • New equipment. Heat pumps, multi-stage furnaces and zoned boilers need a thermostat that supports them.

Do smart thermostats need a C-wire?

Most smart thermostats need a C-wire, a common wire that gives them steady 24-volt power for the screen and Wi-Fi. Many older Long Island homes have only two to four thermostat wires and no C-wire. We use a spare wire if there is one in the cable, run a new cable, or fit an adapter where the manufacturer supports it.

  1. Check the system. We confirm the furnace, boiler or heat pump is working, so the thermostat is not blamed for another fault.
  2. Check the wiring. We count the wires at the thermostat and the equipment, and confirm whether a C-wire is available.
  3. Install and wire. The new base is mounted and wired to the system's terminals, including the reversing-valve wire on heat pumps.
  4. Set up and test. We connect Wi-Fi where you want it, set the system type and run heating and cooling to confirm each works.

Running a new five-wire thermostat cable is sometimes part of a new system: on a Deer Park AC replacement, we ran new cable from the thermostat to the air handler and outdoor unit for start-up.

What does thermostat installation cost?

In K2's job records from January 2022 to October 2026, 72 thermostat jobs had a median price of $450, with the middle half of customers paying $250 to $1,385. Treat that as an estimate: the thermostat model, whether you supply it, and any new wiring change the price, and you hear it before work starts.

  • The thermostat. Supply your own, or have us supply one.
  • Wiring. A spare wire, an adapter or a new cable for the C-wire.
  • System type. Heat pumps, multi-stage equipment and zoned boilers take more setup.

Which thermostat works with your system?

Match the thermostat to the system. Most smart thermostats work with standard 24-volt furnaces, central air and heat pumps. Boilers with several zones usually have a thermostat for each zone. Some older gravity and millivolt heating systems are not compatible with most smart thermostats, so we check before you buy.

  • Furnace and central air: one thermostat controls both, with a fan setting.
  • Heat pumps: the thermostat must support heat pumps and any backup heat.
  • Zoned boilers: one thermostat per zone, wired to the zone valves or circulators.

The first job (a replacement of my heating unit) was handled excellently by Shelby and the second (a replacement of my hot water unit) was amazingly handled by Waseem. The backend customer support is fantastic too, as Sadia is ever responsive by text and phone call. All said, I recommend their services wholeheartedly!"

Thermostat Installation: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install a thermostat I bought myself?

Yes. On a recent Dix Hills call the homeowner supplied a Nest and we installed and wired it. We check that the model suits your system and wiring before it goes on the wall.

What is a C-wire?

The common wire, which gives a smart thermostat steady 24-volt power for its screen and Wi-Fi. Many older homes do not have one. We use a spare wire, run a new cable, or fit an adapter where the thermostat maker supports it.

Why does my new thermostat only control cooling?

It is either wired or set up for one system only, or the model does not support your heating. On a West Babylon job, the first Wi-Fi thermostat ran cooling only, and replacing it with a model that runs both fixed it.

Does my boiler need a special thermostat?

Most hot-water and steam boilers use a standard heat-only thermostat per zone. Some older millivolt systems are not compatible with most smart thermostats, so we check the system first.
