What the homeowner reported

The homeowner called because there was no hot water.

What we found

The gas water heater had failed and could not be repaired. On the same visit, the outdoor air conditioning condenser needed a new 40/5 capacitor.

What we did

Waseem and Justin shut off the gas, drained and disconnected the old tank, and removed it from the basement. They installed a new 40-gallon, 40,000 BTU direct-vent natural gas water heater from A. O. Smith, reconnected the water and gas lines, and checked every connection for leaks. They also replaced the 40/5 capacitor on the AC condenser.

Visits and time on site

One visit, with about seven hours on the job as recorded.

The result

The new water heater was working properly with no leaks, and the air conditioner had its new capacitor. Warranty information for the new heater was sent to the homeowner.

About replacing a gas water heater

A tank water heater that stops heating can sometimes be repaired, but a leaking tank or a failed burner assembly on an older unit usually means replacement. A direct-vent model draws combustion air from outside and vents through the wall, which suits basements without a chimney connection. The gas line, water connections and venting all have to be checked for leaks before the heater is left running.
