No hot water: a blocked water heater vent cleared
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Huntington Station, NYWater Heater RepairTechnician: WaseemMay 2026
No hot water from a brand-new water heater. An empty snack bag was blocking the outside vent; we removed it, restarted the heater and tuned up the cooling.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner reported no hot water. The heating, cooling and water heater systems were all brand new.
What we found
Inside, everything looked fine. The cause was outside: the water heater's vent pipe was clogged with an empty snack bag that had been pushed into it.
What we did
Waseem removed the wrapper from the vent and restarted the water heater. On the same visit he completed a cooling tune-up, replacing a dirty air filter. A maintenance agreement for the heating, cooling and water heater was set up.
The result
With the vent clear, the water heater restarted and the hot water came back. The cooling maintenance was completed on the same visit.

About water heater vents
High-efficiency water heaters vent through plastic PVC pipe, often ending low on an outside wall. If anything blocks that pipe, a safety switch stops the burner so exhaust cannot back up into the house, and the hot water simply stops. That makes a blocked vent look like a broken heater. A screen or guard over a low vent termination, and a glance at it now and then, prevents a repeat. Never try to run a heater with a blocked vent.
