What goes wrong with boilers on Long Island?

Boilers fail differently from furnaces, and steam fails differently from hot water. The calls we see most are a burner that will not fire, cold zones, a dripping relief valve or climbing pressure, banging steam pipes, a low-water cutoff that keeps tripping, leaks at the boiler, and soot or a puff-back on oil.

  • Burner will not fire: a clogged nozzle, filter or ignition transformer on oil; an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve on gas.
  • Some zones cold: a failed zone valve or circulator pump, or air trapped in a hot-water loop.
  • Relief valve dripping or pressure climbing: usually a waterlogged expansion tank or a failing fill valve.
  • Banging steam pipes: pressure set too high, trapped water in pipes that lost their pitch, or failed vents.
  • Low-water cutoff tripping: the key safety device on a steam boiler; it needs testing and flushing.
  • Leaks: fittings, pump seals and relief valves are repairable; leaking boiler sections usually are not.

How quickly can K2 get to a boiler call?

We answer 24/7 and dispatch from Deer Park. We give you a time window rather than a promise in minutes, and put no-heat calls and households with elderly residents, infants or anyone medically vulnerable first. Tell us steam or hot water, the pressure or sight-glass level, and which rooms are cold.

That lets the technician bring the likely parts. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house and call 911 or the gas utility from outside before anything else. On an oil boiler, press the reset button once at most.

What does boiler repair cost on Long Island?

In K2's job records from January 2022 to October 2026, 176 heating repairs, boilers and furnaces together, had a median price of $450, with the middle half of customers paying $180 to $933. Treat that as an estimate, not a quote; you hear the cause and the price before any work starts.

A relief valve, air bleeder or expansion tank costs far less than a circulator pump or a domestic hot water coil. If the boiler itself has failed, the furnace and boiler replacement cost guide puts replacing a gas boiler at $7,500 to $16,000 as an estimate for planning. See Long Island HVAC data for how the repair figures were collected.

How do hot-water baseboard and steam systems fail differently?

Hot-water systems pump water through baseboard or radiators, so circulators, zone valves, trapped air, the expansion tank and the relief valve cause most calls. Steam systems boil water and send steam to radiators, so the water level, low-water cutoff, pressure control, vents and pipe pitch matter instead.

  • Hot-water baseboard: a zone that stays cold (zone valve, circulator or air in the loop), pressure that climbs until the relief valve drips (a waterlogged expansion tank or failing fill valve), and gurgling from trapped air.
  • Steam: banging pipes (pressure set too high, water trapped in pipes that lost their pitch, failed radiator vents), a low-water cutoff that trips, and radiators that heat unevenly because main vents have failed.
  • Domestic hot water: many Long Island boilers also heat tap water through a coil inside the boiler. A leaking or scaled coil means lost hot water even when the heat works.

Why do oil and gas boilers need different repairs?

An oil boiler sprays oil through a nozzle, lights it with an ignition transformer and electrodes, and a primary control locks it out after failed starts. A gas boiler uses an igniter or pilot, a flame sensor and a gas valve. So an oil boiler that will not fire usually needs a different part than a gas one.

On oil, the common fixes are a new nozzle and oil filter, setting the electrodes, and a failed transformer or primary control. Soot, smoke or a puff-back needs an immediate combustion check. On gas, it is usually the igniter or pilot assembly, the flame sensor or the gas valve. Either way, press an oil burner reset once at most and leave it off if it locks out again.

What do older Long Island homes mean for boiler repairs?

Older Long Island homes often have cast-iron boilers serving radiators or baseboard, and many of those boilers were oversized when installed, so they short-cycle. Years of service also mean worn valves, waterlogged expansion tanks and leaking domestic hot water coils, which are some of the most common repairs we make.

We see it across older neighborhoods: steam systems whose pipes have sagged and lost their pitch, hot-water systems with original zone valves and circulators, and boilers whose tankless coil has started to leak. A sound cast-iron boiler is usually worth repairing; water weeping from the boiler sections themselves is the point where replacement makes more sense.

What does K2 check on a no-heat boiler call?

Venting, flue draft and the low-water cutoff come first. Then the burner, controls, circulators, zone valves, expansion tank and relief valve on hot-water systems, or the water line, pressure control, cutoff and main vents on steam. You hear the cause and price first, and we confirm every zone heats before leaving.

On oil we also take a combustion reading so the burner runs clean. Before you call, the safe checks are on these pages: no heat, boiler not firing, furnace blowing cold air and AC not cooling.

What do recent K2 boiler jobs look like?

Real examples from our records: a Huntington boiler that lost hot water and leaked needed new valves, an expansion tank and a new domestic hot water coil. A Dix Hills three-zone boiler with one cold zone was fixed by bleeding air from all zones and replacing the air bleeder and caps.

Where can you get boiler repair near you?

We have detailed boiler repair pages for the towns we work in most, with local housing, permit offices and recent jobs:

Boiler Repair questions

Do you repair both steam and hot-water boilers?

Yes. We repair gas and oil boilers, steam and hot water, including burners, controls, circulators, zone valves, expansion tanks and relief valves.

Why are some rooms cold while others are warm?

On a hot-water system it is usually a failed zone valve or circulator, or air trapped in the loop. Note which rooms are cold when you call; it helps us find the fault faster.

Why is my boiler relief valve dripping?

Usually the pressure is climbing because the expansion tank is waterlogged or the fill valve is failing. It needs a technician; do not cap or plug the relief valve.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Once a year, before the heating season. On oil boilers that includes a new nozzle and filter and a combustion check; on steam, testing and flushing the low-water cutoff.
