Older R-22 system: new capacitor and a cleared drain line
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Commack, NYAC RepairTechnicians: Waseem and JeksonSeptember 2026
A service call on an older R-22 system: a bad capacitor replaced, refrigerant confirmed good, and a leaking drain line cleared with nitrogen.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner called for service on the air conditioning.
What we found
The outdoor condenser had a bad capacitor. The refrigerant level was good, and the indoor air handler checked out, apart from a leaking drain line.
What we did
Waseem and Jekson replaced the capacitor and cleared the drain line with nitrogen.
The result
After the capacitor replacement and the drain repair, everything was working properly. The record notes that the system is very old and uses R-22, so replacing the unit is the longer-term option.

About older R-22 systems
R-22 refrigerant is no longer produced, so it is scarce and expensive. Older systems that use it can still be repaired with standard parts like capacitors and drain fixes, but a refrigerant leak on an R-22 system is usually the point where replacement makes more sense than recharging. Planning that replacement before the system fails, rather than in a heat wave, gives time to compare options.
