AC leaking water: drain line cleared with nitrogen
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Melville, NYAC RepairTechnician: WaseemSeptember 2026
Water was leaking from the air handler. The condensate drain line was not draining; we cleared it with nitrogen and the system was working again.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner called because water was leaking from the air handler.
What we found
The condensate drain line was not working properly, so the water the system removes from the air was backing up instead of draining away. The record also notes that the system is very old.
What we did
Waseem cleared the drain line using nitrogen pressure and checked that water was draining properly afterward.
Visits and time on site
One visit, with about an hour and a half on the job as recorded.
The result
The drain was flowing and the system was working fine. Because the equipment is old, the record notes that more repairs or a replacement should be expected.

About condensate drain leaks
An air conditioner pulls water out of the air as it cools, and on humid Long Island days that adds up quickly. The water drains from a pan under the coil through a small line. When algae, dust or debris block that line, water backs up and spills out of the cabinet, sometimes onto finished floors. Clearing the line with nitrogen pushes the blockage out without chemicals. On older systems, a leak like this is also a good moment to talk about whether the equipment is worth keeping.
