About expansion tanks
When water heats, it expands, and an expansion tank gives that extra water somewhere to go. Inside, a rubber bladder separates the water from a cushion of air. When the bladder fails or the tank waterlogs, pressure spikes every time the water heats, which strains valves and fittings and can make a relief valve drip. Replacing a failed tank is a routine part of keeping a heating system and water heater in good shape.
