About boiler expansion tanks

A hot-water boiler needs room for the water to expand as it heats. The expansion tank holds that extra volume against a cushion of air. When the tank fails, pressure rises with every heating cycle and the relief valve or a weak fitting starts to drip. An air bleeder that leaks shows up the same way, as water around the boiler, so both are checked on a leak call.
