Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Brentwood, NY

Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

A lot of Brentwood houses have outgrown their original heating and cooling. A dormer, a rear extension or a finished basement often ends up with no ductwork reaching it, and that is where a ductless mini split fits. K2 Cooling & Heating installs single-zone and multi-zone systems in Brentwood, working from our shop 4.6 miles west in Deer Park. Since 2023 our records show 4 visits to 3 Brentwood homes for mini split work, including two new installations, one of them for a living room.

Where does a mini split make sense in a Brentwood home?

Anywhere ducts never reached or cannot reach easily. In Brentwood that usually means a rear addition on a ranch, an upstairs dormer on a cape, a converted basement apartment, or a living room the attic air system never cooled well. One wall-mounted head paired with one outdoor unit can handle a single room on its own.

For two-family homes, separate mini split systems give each household its own control, which ends arguments over a shared thermostat. We size each head to its room rather than guessing from the total square footage.

How do we plan the installation around a Brentwood lot?

We start outside, because the outdoor unit needs airflow, drainage and room for service. On dense Brentwood blocks, side yards are narrow, so we look at rear walls, wall brackets and raised pads that keep the unit off the ground and clear of drifting snow, which can bury low equipment here in winter.

Inside, the head goes high on an exterior wall where possible, so the line set and condensate drain have a short path out. Before any hole is drilled, we walk you through where the line set cover will run on the siding, where the drain will discharge and where the dedicated electrical circuit will come from.

Can a mini split heat a Brentwood home in winter too?

Yes. Most current mini splits are heat pumps that heat as well as cool, and cold-climate models keep producing heat well below freezing. Many Brentwood owners run one alongside an existing gas furnace or boiler, letting the mini split carry an addition or spring and fall heat while the original system handles the coldest nights.

In winter the outdoor unit runs defrost cycles and sheds water, so it needs a spot where meltwater will not freeze across a walkway. If the outdoor coil looks iced solid, our frozen heat pump guide explains what is normal and what is not.

What about permits, rebates and paperwork in Brentwood?

Brentwood is in the Town of Islip, and a new mini split installation may need approval from the Town of Islip Department of Planning and Development at 655 Main Street in Islip. K2 does not file town permits, so please confirm the requirements with that office before your installation is scheduled.

PSEG Long Island runs heat pump rebates; they are claimed through a participating contractor or directly with PSEG Long Island; check psegliny.com. We provide manufacturer warranty registration help, described on our warranty page. Rheem KwikComfort financing, with credit provided by Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval, is outlined on our financing page.

What keeps a new mini split running well after the install?

Clean filters and a clear drain do most of the work. Our Brentwood records include follow-up visits on mini splits as well as installs, such as a capacitor change and a refrigerant leak check with a small top-off. Pollen and pine needles clog outdoor coils here, and the filters inside the heads load up faster than most owners expect.

Rinse the indoor filters every few weeks in heavy use, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, and have the system checked once a year through our maintenance plans. Our ductless mini split page has more on how we approach these systems.

Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Brentwood: Questions

How long does a mini split installation take in a Brentwood house?

A single-zone system in an accessible spot is often a one-day job. Multi-zone systems, long line set runs or new electrical work take longer. We tell you how much work time to expect after we see the house, and we set the schedule around your home and the permit status rather than promising a date up front.

Can I put a mini split in my Brentwood basement apartment?

Often, yes. A finished basement or lower-level apartment can usually take a wall or ceiling head with the outdoor unit at grade nearby. Basements stay cool and damp in summer, so moisture removal matters as much as cooling there. Check with the Town of Islip on any rules covering the apartment itself.

Will a mini split replace my Brentwood central air?

It can, but it does not have to. Many Brentwood homes keep the attic central system for the main floor and add a mini split only where that system falls short. If your central air is near the end of its life, we can compare a ducted replacement with a ductless layout, room by room.

Do you install mini splits outside Brentwood?

Yes. We install them throughout the area within 15 miles of our Deer Park shop, and Brentwood is 4.6 miles east of us. See our Brentwood service page for other work we do here, or call (631) 414-7141 to talk through the rooms you want to heat and cool.
