Zone valve, expansion tank and air vent replaced on an aging boiler
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Deer Park, NYBoiler RepairTechnicians: Waseem and ShabbyDecember 2025
An aging boiler needed a zone valve. We replaced the whole zone valve assembly, the expansion tank and the air vent, and cleaned the burners.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowners needed their boiler repaired. A zone valve had to be replaced.
What we found
The zone valve needed replacing, and replacing only part of it was not possible, so the whole assembly had to be changed. The expansion tank and the vent air bleeder also needed replacing. The boiler had not had regular maintenance for a long time.
What we did
Waseem and Shabby replaced the complete zone valve assembly, the expansion tank and the vent air bleeder, and did a detailed burner cleaning. The thermocouple could not be changed without breaking its assembly, so it was left in place.
The result
All of the work was completed. The record recommends replacing the thermocouple assembly at the next issue, a check of another zone valve, and a spring check of the cooling units.

About zone valves
In a zoned hot-water system, each zone has a valve that opens when its thermostat calls for heat. A valve that sticks closed leaves that zone cold. One that sticks open can overheat it. The motor head can sometimes be replaced alone, but if the valve body is worn the full assembly has to go. Older boilers that have gone without maintenance tend to need several of these parts at once.
