Upstairs not cooling: packed condenser coil cleaned
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Hauppauge, NYAC RepairTechnician: WaseemJuly 2026
The upstairs stayed at 77 degrees with the thermostat at 68. The condenser coil was packed with dirt, and the hydronic heat was also on.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner reported that the upstairs zone was not cooling. The thermostat was set to 68 and 70, but the temperature had not dropped below 77 for two days.
What we found
Dust and dirt were packed into the outdoor condenser coil. The home's hydronic heat was also turned on, working against the cooling.
What we did
Waseem turned off the heat and performed a chemical wash of the exposed condenser coil.
The result
After the cleaning, with the heat off, the upstairs system was cooling properly.

About dirty condenser coils
The outdoor coil has to shed the heat taken out of the house. When its fins are packed with dirt, pressures and temperatures climb, the system runs longer and cools less, and the upstairs, which carries the most heat, feels it first. A chemical wash restores airflow through the fins. In homes with both hot-water heat and central air, checking that the heat is off is a simple first step.
