What the homeowner reported

The homeowner asked for a quote to replace the air conditioning. The house had two older indoor air handlers, each with its own outdoor unit.

What we found

The plan recorded on the job was a ducted Daikin air handler serving the second floor from the attic and a ductless Daikin wall unit for the living room, both on one multi-zone outdoor unit. On the day, Waseem judged the existing drain pump unreliable.

What we did

The crew disconnected and removed the two old indoor air handlers, pumped down and removed the two old outdoor units, and installed the new Daikin multi-zone mini-split heat pump system (18,000 plus 24,000 BTU indoor zones) on a 36,000 BTU outdoor unit. They installed a new drain pump, wired a rooftop exhaust fan and repaired the sheetrock.

The result

The new multi-zone system was installed and started up, the new drain pump was in place, and the exhaust fan was wired and working.

About multi-zone mini-splits

A multi-zone system runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, and the indoor units do not have to be the same type. A slim ducted air handler hidden in an attic can serve several upstairs rooms through short duct runs, while a wall unit handles an open living area. Each zone has its own control, and because the system is a heat pump, it heats as well as cools.
