Upstairs AC not working: capacitor, coil and drain
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Huntington, NYAC RepairTechnicians: Waseem and JustinJune 2026
The upstairs system had stopped cooling. A bad capacitor was replaced and the dirty condenser coil cleaned, alongside two cooling tune-ups.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner reported that the upstairs air conditioning was not working.
What we found
On the second-floor system, the capacitor was bad and the outdoor condenser coil was dirty.
What we did
Waseem and Justin cleaned the condenser coil, replaced the capacitor (a 40/7.5 dual run capacitor), cleaned the drain for the second-floor unit, and checked the amps, the air handler and the drain line. They also completed cooling tune-ups on both systems.
The result
After the repair, everything was working properly on the second floor, and both systems had their tune-ups.

About second-floor systems
Upstairs systems on Long Island work hardest, because heat rises and attic air handlers sit in the hottest part of the house. That puts extra load on the outdoor unit, so a weak capacitor or a dirty coil tends to show up there first. Checking the drain at the same time matters too: an attic air handler that overflows can stain the ceiling below.
