Two cooling systems: a failed capacitor and a thermostat that stopped calling
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
St. James, NYAC RepairTechnician: WaseemMay 2026
One system was not cooling at all and another was not responding. A new capacitor fixed one, and reprogramming the thermostat fixed the other.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner reported that one room's air conditioning was not cooling at all.
What we found
The home has two cooling systems. The kitchen system's outdoor condenser had a bad capacitor. The bedroom system was not calling for cooling at all, because its thermostat (changed on an earlier visit) was not sending the signal.
What we did
Waseem replaced the single run capacitor on the kitchen system's condenser and reprogrammed the bedroom thermostat so it calls for cooling.
The result
Both systems were working properly by the end of the visit.

About run capacitors
The run capacitor gives the compressor and outdoor fan motor the electrical boost they need to start and keep running. When it weakens or fails, the outdoor unit may hum without starting, or the fan may not spin, and the house stops cooling. It is one of the most common summer repairs and is usually fixed on the first visit. A system that is not calling for cooling is a different problem: the outdoor unit never gets the signal, so checking the thermostat first saves replacing parts that are fine.
