AC Installation in Massapequa, NY

Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician

Most Massapequa homes we cool keep the air handler in the attic, and the outdoor unit has to live with salt air off South Oyster Bay. Housecall Pro shows K2 replacing central air at 5 different Massapequa homes between October 2016 and July 2024, from a single 3-ton change-out to a house that took two complete systems. Our shop is 9.4 miles northeast, in Deer Park.

Which AC installs has K2 completed in Massapequa?

We have replaced central air at five Massapequa homes. Three got a single 3- or 4-ton system, and two got a pair of systems. Every one paired a new outdoor condenser with a matched indoor air handler, so no house ended up with a new outdoor unit feeding an old coil.

  • October 2016: a 4-ton, 16 SEER condenser with a matched 4-ton air handler.
  • July 2017: two 3-ton Rheem hydronic air handlers, each with its own condenser.
  • January 2021: a 4-ton attic air handler on a new drain pan, a 4-ton condenser, partly new ductwork, an added return with a filter grille, a new thermostat and an Aprilaire media filter.
  • August 2022: a new Rheem air handler in the attic and a 3-ton, 16 SEER Rheem condenser outside.
  • July 2024: two Carrier systems rated 16 SEER, a 2-ton and a 3-ton, both with attic air handlers.

Why do so many Massapequa homes cool from the attic?

Many Massapequa capes, ranches and split-levels were built before central air was common, so cooling was often added later through the attic, where there was room for an air handler and short duct runs to the bedrooms. Three of our five Massapequa installs replaced air handlers in the attic.

That location shapes the job. The old unit is disconnected from its wiring, drain lines and ducts, then carried out through a scuttle or pull-down stair. The new one is hung from threaded rods so it doesn't sit on the ceiling joists, and a fresh drain pan goes underneath. In the 2024 job we modified both the supply and return ductwork so the trunk lines met the new cabinets cleanly instead of being forced into place.

What is a hydronic air handler, and why did one Massapequa home use two?

A hydronic air handler holds two coils: a cooling coil fed by the outdoor condenser and a hot-water coil fed by the boiler. The same blower and ducts deliver both heat and air conditioning. The 2017 Massapequa home had two of them, each with its own 3-ton condenser outside.

This setup, often called hydro-air, is common in Long Island homes that heat with a boiler but wanted central air. Replacing the cooling side means the hot-water piping has to be reconnected and purged of air too, so the boiler side keeps working when winter comes. If your home heats through the same ducts that cool it and you have a boiler in the basement, tell us when you call so we plan for both.

Why does an attic system need two drain lines?

An attic air handler produces condensate every hour it cools, and if that water can't leave, it ends up in the ceiling below. That is why attic units get a primary drain, a secondary drain or overflow, and a pan underneath. Each of our Massapequa attic installs included a new drain pan with the drain lines reconnected.

The secondary path is the one that gets forgotten. On a March 2026 service call at a different Massapequa home, water had stained a ceiling under the attic unit; the primary drain was clear, but the secondary line had been left open. Our technician corrected it on the spot. During an install we check both lines, confirm the pan slopes toward its outlet, and recommend a float switch where the pan has no safe overflow.

Does salt air off the bay change the outdoor unit?

Salt air speeds up corrosion on aluminum coil fins and copper joints, so condensers near Massapequa's canals and South Oyster Bay can age faster than inland units. A new install should sit on a level pad above grade, with clearance on all sides, and get rinsed with fresh water during yearly maintenance.

Every Massapequa change-out we did included a new condenser pad outside. Homes south of Merrick Road also deal with flood risk; if your old unit sat low and took on water during a storm, raising the new pad is worth discussing before the day of the install. After the system is running, a yearly tune-up is the time to wash salt film off the coil before it eats into the fins.

Can the existing copper line set be reused?

Sometimes. In the August 2022 and July 2024 Massapequa jobs, the existing line sets were sound, so we reconnected them and pressure-tested them with nitrogen before evacuating and charging the systems. A line set that leaks, is undersized for the new equipment or runs through a wall that is being opened anyway gets replaced.

Refrigerant type matters here as well. The 2022 and 2024 systems use R-410A. Under EPA rules, new residential split systems built since January 2025 use lower-impact A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32, and a line set reused with one of them has to be cleaned and checked to that equipment's requirements. Our post on the refrigerant changeover explains what that means for a replacement.

Who handles permits for an AC installation in Massapequa?

Massapequa is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, so equipment changes there fall under the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development. Massapequa Park is an incorporated village with its own building department. K2 does not file permits, so please confirm requirements with the right office first.

A property tax bill shows whether a house sits in the hamlet or the village, which settles which office to call. Once your quote is final, we can share equipment details an office may ask for, such as model numbers and tonnage.

How is a Massapequa AC installation priced?

Each Massapequa installation is quoted in writing after a visit to the house. The figure depends on tonnage, how many systems the home needs, whether the air handler is in the attic or basement, ductwork changes, the line set and whether a boiler coil is involved. Our Long Island AC installation cost guide explains each factor.

Financing is offered through Rheem KwikComfort, with credit provided by Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval. After start-up we help you register the equipment with the manufacturer; our warranty page covers that step. For finished work, see our Deer Park central air replacement. More detail lives on the AC installation service page and the Massapequa HVAC hub, and we also install in nearby Farmingdale and Amityville.

AC Installation in Massapequa: Questions

How long does an AC replacement take in a Massapequa attic?

A single attic change-out is usually a one-day job once the equipment is on site, and a two-system home can take longer. Attic access, ductwork changes and whether the line set is reused all affect the schedule. We give you a start date when the quote is approved, but we don't promise an install date before then.

Can K2 install central air in a Massapequa home that heats with a boiler?

Yes. One option is a hydro-air system, where an air handler with both a cooling coil and a hot-water coil connects to the boiler, as in our 2017 Massapequa job. Another is a separate attic air handler for cooling only. A ductless mini-split also works where running ducts is impractical.

What size air conditioner does a Massapequa home need?

Our Massapequa installs ranged from 2 to 4 tons per system, but size comes from a load calculation of the house, not from the old unit's label. Insulation, windows, sun exposure and how the rooms are laid out all change the answer, and an oversized unit cools fast without removing enough humidity.

Should I replace the indoor and outdoor units together?

In every Massapequa job we replaced both, because a new condenser on an old coil often runs below its rating and can shorten the compressor's life. Matched equipment also keeps manufacturer registration simple. If only the outdoor unit failed and the indoor coil is recent and compatible, we will tell you.
