Leaking, frozen system: drain P-trap, TXV and condenser fixed
Last updated Reviewed by Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician
Deer Park, NYAC RepairTechnician: WaseemJune 2026
Water leaking from the heating and cooling unit and no cooling. The drain had no P-trap, the TXV needed fixing and the condenser was dirty.

What the homeowner reported
The homeowner reported that the heating and cooling unit was leaking water and the house was not cooling.
What we found
Three problems: the condensate drain line had no P-trap, so negative pressure was pulling air in and the coil froze; the TXV was loose; and the outdoor condenser was dirty.
What we did
Waseem fixed the drain line and the TXV, and chemically cleaned the outdoor condenser coil with the jacket removed.
Visits and time on site
Two visits, as recorded on the job.
The result
After the drain, TXV and coil work, everything was working properly. The homeowner asked about a heating and cooling maintenance agreement.

About P-traps on condensate drains
The indoor blower creates suction inside the cabinet. Without a P-trap holding a plug of water in the drain line, that suction pulls air in through the drain instead of letting water out, so condensate backs up, overflows the pan and can contribute to a frozen coil. A proper trap is a small part of the installation that prevents leaks and ceiling stains.
