Heat Pump Water Heaters on Long Island: Will One Fit Your Basement?

In short: Heat pump water heaters move heat from basement air into your tank. Here's what the space needs, what PSEG Long Island offers, and what K2 does for water heaters.

A heat pump water heater can cut the electricity a tank water heater uses, and PSEG Long Island pays toward one. Whether it makes sense in your house mostly comes down to the basement: how warm it stays, how much air it has, and where the condensate goes. Here's what to check, what PSEG offers, and what we do and don't do for water heaters.

How does a heat pump water heater work?

A heat pump water heater pulls heat from the air around it and moves it into the water in the tank, instead of making all that heat with an electric element. As of April 2026, PSEG Long Island says these units use up to 50% less energy than traditional water heaters.

It looks like a regular tank with a small compressor and fan on top. The fan draws room air across a cold coil, the refrigerant picks up that heat, and the compressor moves it into the water. PSEG's heat pump water heater page describes it the same way: heat moves from the air in your home into the water. Because the unit takes heat out of the room, the room gets a little cooler while it runs.

Will a heat pump water heater work in a Long Island basement?

Often, yes. As of October 2026, ENERGY STAR says to install one in an interior space that stays between 40 and 90°F year-round, with about 1,000 cubic feet of air around it. Many Long Island basements meet that, but small closets and unheated spaces often don't.

For a sense of scale, 1,000 cubic feet is roughly a 12 by 12 foot room with a 7-foot ceiling. The open, unfinished basement under a lot of Capes, ranches and split-levels in towns like Deer Park, Commack and Huntington has far more than that. A water heater tucked into a small closet in a finished basement may not, unless it can draw on a larger space. ENERGY STAR's heat pump water heater page also notes they run less efficiently in cold spaces.

The cooling effect cuts both ways. In a damp Long Island basement in August, a unit that cools and dries the air is a bonus. In January, the heat it pulls from the basement is heat your boiler or furnace has to make up somewhere.

What else does the space need besides temperature and air?

It needs somewhere for condensate to go and the electrical supply the manufacturer calls for. As the unit cools the air, moisture drips off the coil, so it needs a floor drain, a condensate line or a pump. And because it runs on electricity, your panel needs room for its circuit.

A few other things to look at before you buy:

  • Clearance: room around the unit for the fan to breathe and for a technician to reach the controls and filter.
  • Height: the compressor sits on top of the tank, so check the model's height against the ceiling over the old tank.
  • Noise: there's a fan and a compressor running, which matters if the tank sits next to a bedroom or office.
  • What comes out: replacing a gas heater means the gas line gets capped and the old vent dealt with.

Does PSEG Long Island offer a rebate for heat pump water heaters?

Yes. As of July 2026, PSEG Long Island lists heat pump water heater rebates of up to $1,200, limited to a share of the purchase price set out on PSEG's rebate page. Rebates are claimed through a PSEG Long Island participating contractor or directly with PSEG Long Island; confirm current terms at psegliny.com.

As of July 2026, PSEG's ENERGY STAR rebate page lets you apply online yourself with a paid-in-full receipt showing the model number, as long as the product was on the qualified list when you bought it. You can also get the discount at checkout by buying through the PSEG Long Island Online Marketplace. As of April 2026, PSEG's heat pump water heater pages limit it to one unit per residential account every 5 years. Does K2 install heat pump water heaters?

No. K2 repairs and replaces gas and electric tank water heaters, but none of our job records include a heat pump water heater install, so we don't list them as a service. Call and ask what we can quote for your house, and we'll tell you straight what we do and don't do.

What does K2 do for water heaters?

We repair and replace standard tank water heaters, gas and electric. Recent jobs include a failed gas heater replaced in East Meadow, a leaking pipe coupling fixed in Dix Hills, and a blocked vent cleared in Huntington Station. Each one started with finding out exactly what had failed before anything got replaced.

In July 2026 in East Meadow, the homeowner had no hot water and the gas water heater had failed beyond repair. Waseem and Justin shut off the gas, drained and removed the old tank, and installed a new 40-gallon, 40,000 BTU direct-vent natural gas water heater from A. O. Smith, then checked every connection for leaks. They also replaced a 40/5 capacitor on the air conditioning condenser on the same visit. See the East Meadow water heater replacement.

In October 2026 in Dix Hills, a homeowner pointed out a leak during another service call. Waseem came back the next day, replaced the leaking coupling on the water heater piping and resoldered the joint. The tank itself was fine. Read about the Dix Hills water heater leak.

Tip from Waseem Shahzad, Lead Technician: if the hot water stops, check the vent outside before you assume the heater is dead. In May 2026 in Huntington Station, a brand-new water heater had stopped making hot water. Everything inside looked fine; an empty snack bag had been pushed into the vent pipe outside. Waseem pulled it out and restarted the heater, and the hot water came back. A blocked vent trips a safety switch on purpose, so keep low vent openings clear and never run a heater with a blocked vent. Here's the Huntington Station vent job.

Our water heater repair and replacement service covers all of this work.

What if my boiler makes my hot water?

Plenty of older Long Island homes heat their domestic water off the boiler, through a coil inside it or a separate indirect tank. Moving that job to a heat pump water heater changes how the boiler works, especially in summer, so it's worth talking through the whole system before you buy anything.

If the boiler side is already acting up, our boiler pressure guide explains what the gauge should read. If you're weighing a change to how the house is heated too, the oil vs gas vs heat pump running-cost calculator compares the fuels.

Our recommendation: if your basement stays between 40 and 90°F, has plenty of open air, and has a drain and panel space nearby, a heat pump water heater is worth pricing with an installer who puts them in. If your tank sits in a tight closet or a cold space, or your boiler makes your hot water, a standard tank replacement is often the simpler fix. Either way, find out exactly why the current heater stopped before you replace it.

Call K2 Cooling & Heating at (631) 414-7141 if your water heater is leaking, out, or near the end of its life. We'll find what failed and quote the gas or electric tank repair or replacement we do for homes within about 15 miles of Deer Park.

Frequently Asked Questions

As of April 2026, PSEG Long Island says heat pump water heaters use up to 50% less energy than traditional water heaters. They save by moving heat from the surrounding air into the water instead of making all of it with an electric element. Your actual savings depend on your hot water use and where the unit sits.
Often not. As of October 2026, ENERGY STAR says to install one in an interior space that stays between 40 and 90 degrees year-round with about 1,000 cubic feet of air around it. That is roughly a 12 by 12 foot room with a 7-foot ceiling, which most closets fall well short of.
Yes, somewhat. It pulls heat out of the air around it to warm the water, so the room cools while it runs, and it dries the air as moisture drips off the coil. In a damp summer basement that helps. In winter, your heating system makes up the heat the water heater takes.
