Tankless Water Heater Installation and Repair on Long Island

Gas tankless water heaters installed, repaired and descaled for homes within 15 miles of Deer Park.
A tankless water heater heats water only when a tap opens, so it never runs out and frees the floor space a tank takes up. K2 installs and repairs gas tankless units from our shop at 60 S 2nd St, Unit V in Deer Park, for homes within about 15 miles across western Suffolk and eastern Nassau.
Tankless work is a small share of what we do, and we say so plainly: our Housecall Pro records show a Rheem direct-vent tankless installation in Hauppauge in April 2020 and a major repair in Lindenhurst in November 2025, where we replaced the heat exchanger, the control board, two water adjustment valves and the wire harness. Below is how these units work, what goes wrong with them, and when a tank is the better choice.
How does a tankless water heater work?
When you open a hot tap, water flowing through the unit trips a flow sensor. The control board lights a gas burner, and a heat exchanger warms the water as it passes through, to the temperature you set. When the tap closes, the burner shuts off. Nothing is kept hot between uses, which is where the savings come from.
Is a tankless water heater worth it on Long Island?
It can be for households that run out of hot water, want back the space a tank takes, or plan to stay in the house for years. It costs more to install than a tank, often needs bigger gas piping and new venting, and needs regular descaling. For many homes a standard tank is still the simpler, less expensive choice.
What size tankless unit does a home need?
Tankless units are sized by flow, in gallons per minute, at the temperature rise your water needs. Add up the fixtures likely to run at once, such as two showers and a dishwasher, then check that flow against the unit's rating with winter's colder incoming water. An undersized unit gives lukewarm water when two showers run.
Why does my tankless water heater go cold in the middle of a shower?
Common causes are a flow rate too low to keep the burner lit, scale in the heat exchanger, a dirty inlet filter, an ignition or flame-sensing fault, or venting and combustion air problems. A brief burst of cold water right after another hot tap was used, often called a cold water sandwich, is normal for many units.
How often should a tankless water heater be descaled?
Most manufacturers call for flushing the heat exchanger with a descaling solution periodically, often yearly, and more often where water is hard. Minerals build up on the hot surfaces, cut efficiency and can trigger error codes or overheating. The inlet water filter screen should be cleaned at the same time.
Can a tankless heat exchanger be replaced?
Yes, and it is often covered by the manufacturer's warranty for longer than other parts. In November 2025 in Lindenhurst, we replaced a tankless unit's heat exchanger along with its control board, two water adjustment valves and the full wire harness, using warranty parts the homeowner supplied, and ran it until hot water was steady.
What goes wrong with tankless water heaters?
- Error codes and shutdowns. Most units show a code for ignition failure, flame loss, overheating or a venting fault. The code tells the technician where to start.
- Scale in the heat exchanger. Mineral buildup reduces flow and heat transfer and can make the unit overheat and shut down.
- Clogged inlet filter. A small screen on the cold inlet catches debris. When it clogs, flow drops and the burner may not stay lit.
- Failed control board or wiring. Electronics run the burner, fan and sensors; a failed board or harness can stop the unit entirely, as in our Lindenhurst repair.
- Leaking or failed heat exchanger. Water inside the cabinet or a unit that fires but won't heat can point to the heat exchanger.
- Venting problems. Blocked or disconnected vent pipes stop the unit and can be a safety issue. Snow can also cover side-wall terminations; see high-efficiency equipment shutting off in the cold.
- Gas supply too small. A tankless burner needs far more gas at full fire than a tank. Undersized piping causes cold water when several taps run.
How does a tankless installation or repair visit work?
- Look at the house. We check how many fixtures run at once, the gas meter and piping size, where the unit can mount, and the vent route to an outside wall or the roof.
- Quote in writing. You get a written price for the unit and installation, or for the repair, before work starts.
- Install. On a new installation we remove the old tank, mount the tankless unit, connect water with isolation valves for future descaling, connect gas and venting, and wire power for the controls.
- Repair. On a repair we read the error history, test the sensors, burner, fan and board, check the inlet filter and look for scale or leaks, then replace what has failed.
- Test. We run hot water at several fixtures, check temperature and flow, and show you the temperature setting and the descaling valves.
Water heater work can need local approval. K2 does not file town permits, so please confirm what your town requires before installation.
What affects the cost of a tankless water heater?
We don't post a single price for tankless work. You get a written quote after we see the house. What changes it:
- The unit. Flow rating, condensing or non-condensing, and indoor or outdoor models.
- Gas piping. Many homes need a larger gas line to the unit, and sometimes a meter change through the utility.
- Venting. Condensing units vent through PVC and need a condensate drain; others need stainless vent pipe. The route to outside matters.
- Removing the old heater. Taking out a tank, or replacing an existing tankless unit.
- Water treatment. A scale filter or softener where water is hard.
- Repairs. A board, sensor or heat exchanger is priced on its own, and warranty parts can change the labor-only cost.
Should you repair a tankless unit or go back to a tank?
A tankless unit with a failed board, sensor or valve is usually worth repairing, especially while the heat exchanger is still under the manufacturer's warranty. Replacement starts to make sense when the heat exchanger fails out of warranty on an older unit, parts are hard to get, or the unit has never kept up with the house.
Going back to a tank is a reasonable choice if the household uses less hot water than it once did or doesn't want the descaling routine. Our water heater repair and replacement page covers gas and electric tanks, and our post on heat pump water heaters covers another option. Financing is available through Rheem KwikComfort, with credit provided by Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval. See financing for how it works.
What should you check before calling about a tankless unit?
Note any error code on the display; it saves time on the visit. Make sure the gas is on at other appliances and the unit has power. Check whether the problem happens at one tap or every tap, and whether it happens only when two fixtures run at once. If the unit is outside or vents out a side wall, look for snow or debris at the vent after a storm.
Don't open the sealed burner compartment or bypass any safety device. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. For other heating emergencies, see 24/7 emergency service.

Tankless Water Heaters: Frequently Asked Questions
Does K2 install tankless water heaters?
Yes, gas tankless units for homes within about 15 miles of Deer Park. It is a small part of our work: our records show a Rheem direct-vent installation in Hauppauge and a major heat exchanger and control repair in Lindenhurst. We quote each job in writing after seeing the house.
Can a tankless water heater run out of hot water?
It will not run out the way a tank does, but it can only heat so much water at once. If more fixtures run than its flow rating supports, the water turns lukewarm. Sizing the unit for the fixtures you use together avoids that.
Does a tankless water heater need a bigger gas line?
Often, yes. A tankless burner can use several times the gas of a tank heater at full fire, so the pipe from the meter must be large enough. We check the piping and meter during the estimate; see <a href="/service/gas-line-installation">gas line installation</a>.
Will a tankless water heater work during a power outage?
Most gas tankless units need electricity for the controls, fan and ignition, so they stop when the power goes out. A tank heater with a standing pilot may still make some hot water. Ask about this if outages are common on your street.
How long does a tankless water heater last?
Many last longer than a tank heater when they are descaled on schedule, and heat exchanger warranties often run longer than parts warranties. Hard water and skipped maintenance shorten that life. Check your model's warranty terms for exact coverage.
